Temporary Registration Process

UPDATE 7/7/2021 I have had to temporarily remove the registration option as our site is being hit very hard by spam applications. Details in posts below.

UPDATE 7/17/2021 I have re-activated the registration option. I still need to have folks drop me an email to give me a heads-up so that I can quickly activate a legitimate request

UPDATE LATE 7/17/2021 Had to shut registration off again. Please send me an email if you want to register.

UPDATE 10/14/2021 I have activated registration again. If we get blasted by spam applications, I will have to shut it down again

Hi Folks.

As has been the case in the past, the Russians are really hitting us pretty hard with spam registrations. I have updated our spambot countermeasures and it did no good. I have tried blocking the IP address, but they are all different.

I say that the Russians are the culprits. That is not just me talking out of my hat. Many of the registrations do not even try to hide the fact that there email address has a ".ru" suffix.

It takes time to sort through each registration and I am burned out trying to deal with the issue. I am currently doing mass deletes of the applications without reviewing them. I hate that, but that is my way of dealing with the issue.

So, I am asking that folks who want to submit legitimate registrations send me an email (see signature) first with the user name they are going to use so that I will look for it in the list of registration requests.

Thanks.

Hi folks. Only 15 registration requests this morning

I want to make it very clear that we welcome registrations from folks who have an interest in Eagle buses. Forum membership is free and the registration process is fairly straight forward. Unfortunately I have had to add the extra step of sending me an email, but that is also fairly easy.

This problem has gotten out of hand. Not only is it an issue with reviewing registrations, but I also get an email for each application and the spam applications are filling up my mailbox.

Today I disabled registration. That is a really drastic step, but I really don't have a choice.

I will open it back up in a few days to see what happens.

Again, If you want to register to become a member send me an email (signature) and I will find a way to get your information entered and approved.

I am so frustrated that our tiny little website is the target of this crap.

Thanks Jim for doing all that work. I hope not to lose this forum and all the information shared here. It is extremely valuable to keep our birds flying.

Looks like our new cold war with the Russians is in tech instead of rockets

Well, it has certainly been nice and quiet on the administration side since I removed the registration option. Today I re-activated the registration option.

I still need to have folks drop me an email to give me a heads-up so that I can quickly activate a legitimate request.

Part of my reasoning for removing the registration option was to make sure that someone had not discovered a back door to the registration process. I have confirmed that is not the case.

It will be interesting to see if we start getting spam registrations right away.

Fun

I have had to shut the registration off again. In a few short hours after I re-activated registration this morning, I got 9 spam applications.

If anyone has any suggestions, I am glad to listen.

I have again activated the registration process. Hopefully we will not have a ton of spam applications.

It is still a good idea to send me an email if your have submitted your registration, since I may have to make bulk eliminations of registrations.

Wow. Withing a couple of hours I have 4 spam applications - two with direct Russia email address.

I will let it go for a while and see if there is some other spam countermeasure I can use.

Well, James jumped in and created a new spam bot measure and it is working.

Hopefully we will have a bit of time before they find a way to defeat the new measure.

Sure glad that we can leave the registration open in case anyone wants to join our group.
