There was a questions posed to me recently and I had to go look for an answer. The questions was" What is a good bulk photo resizing program?"

I knew I HAD a bulk resizing program on my computer but I normally use Photoshop and resize and crop individually so I had to go on a search. I found this FREE, easy to use, bulk resizer that you can download.

Now this is a basic resizer. No cropping or anything like that. Just make your big pictures into small pictures that you can post on the net.

Here are the basics:
- Download the program.
- The file you download is the program. Put it in a folder on your desktop.
- The file is called PhotoSize400. That means the photos will be resized to 400 pixels wide. If you want to change the size, just change the name. Example: If you want your photos 500 pixels wide, change the name to PhotoSize500.
- Copy all the photos you want to resize into the folder with the program.
- Double click on the program to start it.
- Select all the photos and drag them onto the black program window.
- The resized photos are created in the same folder but have the size added to the name. Example: DSC0017.jpg would be resized and named DSC0017-500.jpg.
- You can then copy your original photos and the resized ones to wherever you want to archive them. This leaves your PhotoResize empty for the next batch.

I have not tried Dales suggested software, but I thought I would give you a couple of alternatives and discuss the "evils" of MS Vista

Over on the MAK board, one of our members (blue_goose) mentioned a software program the can be found on the MS website:

Well, stupid me, I figured that if it is on MS, it must be good. Trouble is, it is not compatible with MS Vista

I then did some searching and found an equivalent program in the Open Source domain: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phototoysclone

The following is copied from a post in that MAK thread. I am including it in this thread, in case folks have software issues with Vista. I worded that wrong. If you have Vista, you have software problems

First of all, if you have Vista, you will quickly find, as luvrbus points out, that a huge number of software programs do not work. This includes legal versions of pre 2007 MS software. This seems to be a very planned highway robbery by the MS folks.

You should become very familiar with "open source" software. This is free software that comes pretty close to duplicating most of the major software programs. This is not pirated software. It is a part of a huge effort to make free software available to the public. For details go to: http://www.opensource.org/about

For example:

1) An almost full office suite at: http://www.openoffice.org/

2) A full power desktop publishing program: http://www.scribus.net/

3) An Adobe level photo program: http://www.gimp.org/

The program I mentioned above is a part of that organization.

I downloaded it and played with it for a bit and it seems to be a great program. It is a very simple program that apparently does the same thing as the Powertoy image program. You select one or more pictures then have them resized to one of three sizes. You will have to play with the sizes, but the large size appears to be small enough to be acceptable to most boards. I took a raw 2.5 meg photo and used the "large" resize ("fits a 1024 z 768 screen") and it reduced it to a file just over 100 kb. In truth, the medium size would be better for most applications and the small would be typically used for web pages.

Note that this program will not let you adjust the photo or crop the photo. If you need that, you will need to pre-process the photo.

After downloading it, I ran Spybot just to make sure everything was OK. No problems.

I have been looking for just such a program and I am happy as a clam.

Another easy way from a Windows computer is to use the built in program.

1. Go to the folder with your images.
2. CTRL+A to select all of the images.
3. Right click > Send to > Mail Recipient
4. In older versions, it would only have one default size, but in Windows 7 (and probably Vista for you sad souls that have it ), it brings up a Attach Files popup box. You can choose from 5 sizes that range from 640x480 all the way up to your original file size.
5. Click Attach. This will attach all of the resized photos into an email.
6. From the email, CRTL+A to select them all again, then drag them back to the folder that you want to store them in. It could just be a "resized" folder in your original folder.

Just resizing, no cropping or anything fancy. For cropping and recoloring, I'd recommend Picasa. I posted more info about it in the "How to Post Photos" thread: http://www.eaglesinternational.net/foru ... 7&start=10" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

i am new to this group and just posted today some pics of the project i'm undertaking. i apologize for the pics and them not being resized

Sorry, we made a change to the forum. We now host photos - any size photo. If they are large photos, we resize them as thumbnails to fit the screen.
