Engine Rotation Question (starter information)

What is the engine rotation for my Model 10 with a DD6v92T ???

I’m having to replace the starter. Installed new batteries and she won’t turn over. I dropped the starter and tested it on my bench. The solenoid works and the starter spins, but the unit looks as old as dirt. A few hours later I decided to spin it again (trying to figure out whether I needed a Left Hand or Right Hand starter) and the solenoid clicked and kicked the gear back but the starter didn’t spin. We’re getting ready for a trip and I don’t want this starter to fail on the road so I decided it would be prudent to replace it. However the question remains; do I have a Right Hand engine or Left Hand engine?
The parts boys (as well they should) demand an answer to that important question and I’m stumped.
All I’m certain of at this point is that the starter has 11 teeth and if I were facing the flywheel and therefor looking at the gear end of the starter, when the starter turns, it spins in a clockwise direction, which would turn the flywheel (the opposite direction) counter-clock-wise.
So, then if I were to stand at the back of the bus and look at what is the “front” of the engine, my engine should rotate “clock-wise”
Clockwise and counter-clockwise seem like the correct descriptions of engine rotation. So I don’t understand this “right-hand” and “left-hand” business. It doesn’t make any sense to me and being as I can’t manage to see my engine serial numbers (because there is too much plumbing in the way) I’m hoping that someone can help me sort this out, because I need to find a new starter today (Saturday) or Monday at the latest.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance…

You have a "right hand" clockwise engine.
To my knowledge, the GM coaches with the engine mounted crosswise are the only "left hand"
Engines.

Thanks Joe,

Right Hand rotation - That was the conclusion that I came too, but I wanted to be sure.

Any brand suggestions or even part numbers for a new starter?

You will want a modern starter such as the 39MT.

Here is a thread on the subject: http://eaglesinternational.net/eagles-i ... f=5&t=2364

Hay Jim,
I appreciate the advice ;-))

I looked up that Delco Remy 39MT
And it sounds like the ticket; lighter, faster and cheaper.

There are only two questions.

Will it fit my 6V92 (I understand about the rotatable flange) but….

Has anyone put one in a 6V92???

And “reliability” – is this thing going to last???

Update on the starter issue

I wound up buying a reman Delco Remy 42MT for $289 and was able to pick it up that day (on Saturday).

When I threw the core up on the counter the parts man informed me that what I had was a 40MT. And he even showed me in the Delco catalogue. The 40MT has a square part of the solenoid. But, he didn’t have one of those, which is fine because I had already decided on the 42MT

The 42MT specs for an engine size up to 14.8 Liter or 903 Cubic Inches, whereas the 41MT specs for an engine size up to 9.7 Liter or 598 Cubic Inches.

The 40MT; I suspect Delco Remy isn’t making any more as it’s not listed on their web site.
Being as my 6V92 has 552 CI, I figured it would be better to have the stronger starter. Hence I went with the 42MT.

And I put in a new pair of starter batteries replacing the pair of Odyssey PC 2250’s I had with the same thing.

Of further note regarding the relationship between the batteries and the starter:

The Odyssey’s are 1,225 CCA each giving me a total of 2,450 CCA, and the 42MT starter is rated for a max of 2,500 amps. So, we have a safe margin there.

“Excessive available CCA can damage starters.” So says the Delco Remy instruction sheet that came with the new starter. And it lists the Recommendations for the Delco Remy starters by series:

40MT 12V 2500 CCA
41MT 12V 1875 CCA
42MT 12V 2500 CCA

So, if I would have bought the 41MT it might have been damaged via excessive CCA.

Worked all Saturday night (daytime temps are over 100) and fired the beast Sunday morning.

What a joy!!!!

It always started good before but, if possible, it starts even better now.

Hitting the key is like flicking a switch. The engine doesn’t even “crank” it just lights off. I swear I don’t think the engine even makes one complete revolution before she growls to life.

So, everything is good again and I can get back to prepping for our little trip.

Thanks for your help.

Richard, thank you for updating your post. Those kinds of responses are always appreciated.

I modified the subject to reflect that this thread contains some good starter information.

While you chose the 42T for your bus, I thought I would add a bit more on the 39MT.

We did not exactly answer your earlier questions. The 39MT is reported to be a very robust starter that uses the latest gear drive technology. More data is found here: http://www.delcoremy.com/Starters/Find- ... on-Starter

Clifford has reported that the part number for the 39MT starter for a 6V92 is: 8200308. To be on the safe side, I did a quick search that would confirm that number is correct.
