Fixed???: "Log me on automatically each visit" not working

For the past several weeks, it appears that the convenience of this function, when logging in, has not been working.

The phpBB technical forums suggest that it is a cookie address problem. I have worked on that correction quite a bit and nothing seems to work. I will continue to work on the issue as time permits.

If you are logging in via a computer, and you saved your password in your browser, you should be able to click twice on the login name and your browser will load both you login name and password -- saving a lot of typing.

If you are logging in via your smart phone and trying to connect via a browser (for example, Safari) I am told it is very frustrating.

A perfect solution for phone users is to use the Tapatalk app (free) on your phone. I installed the software on our forum a couple of years ago. Login is automatic once you set it up (pretty simple). Lots of folks on the major bus boards use Tapatalk exclusively to read/reply/post pictures. Indeed, we have 99 members registered to use that app on our forum (as of this writing).

I hope this is not premature, but it appears that I have fixed the problem.

In order for this to work, you will need to get to a login screen where you can check the "log me in automatically" box. After that when you go to our forum site, you should not have to login.

I am sorry this has taken so long to fix. As I suspected it was a simple fix, but a slight error in the cookie setting messed the option up and the error was not obvious.

As noted, this option works via our forum putting a cookie on your computer. Virtually every site does this and it is not some sort of spyware. The cookie is the factor that lets the software know who you are and then it reacts accordingly. For example, the software will keep track of what you have read and lets you have the option to only look at new posts. Some how that function has continued to work (must be a different cookie) but the login cookie did not.

If you have disabled cookies, the option will not work.

Well, this may not be fixed.

One member contacted me to tell me he still has problems.

One of the issues that makes this so hard to test is my admin/moderator status. That level changes how my account reacts with the forum. I have been doing some testing with Pat's account (club member rank) and it does appear that we still have an issue.

I am not sure where I go from here. My account works fine, but others (some/all?) still have issues with the "log me in automatically" option. That makes it even harder to troubleshoot.

I will keep working on it.

Just for information, my login had always worked until you started to have problems. Now it still dos't work, but no problem I still get on with two clicks.

I think that the "log me in automatically" worked until the last upgrade was installed.

I have done of ton of research on the issue and lots of folks have problems. I have made every recommended change to the settings and nothing seems to work.

We are on the phpbb 3.0.x platform and I have one last update available that could be installed, but every update seems to bring new problems.

phpbb now has two new platforms 3.1.x and 3.2.x. However, the conversion to those platforms are now trivial:
phpBB 3.2 is not compatible with 3.0 and most of the previous files will need to be removed prior to upgrading.
I started to test 3.1.x on my computer over a year ago and just could not find the time to do the testing. Now 3.2.x is available.

Our forum is not all that modified with the exception of the look and feel which is defined by the "style" file. Those files no longer work with the new platforms and we no longer have any resource to help me make the conversion.

I do not have the time resource to make the platform change right now (probably not in the near future either). If anyone knows of a resource we could contract with, let me know.

Right now the forum works pretty good, so we will have to live with this problem until we find a resource to help us.

This function is affected by some security software settings. I opened up most of those settings a week or so ago, so you may be seeing the impact of those changes.

My research suggests that the "log me...." function is also impacted by the browser you use.

It is so strange: it works for me, but when I test with Pat's login (same browser session) it does not work.
