Eagle 05 DD-3 to Spring Brake Conversion Instructions

Post by Dreamscape »

I received this information today and wanted to pass it along. I want to also add that myself or any other member of Eagles International shall not be held responsible for any documents containing information listed below. It is for illustration purposes only. Any work done by yourself or another party, do so at your own risk.

Now that the legal stuff is done, I want to point out that I do not know of anyone personally that has done this. If anyone does please have them respond to this post and add any pertinent information.

These were sent to me eltronically, so the hand written details are somewhat blurry, but I think you can get the meaning after studying them.

I am grateful to Jim France for sending this to me, and for all those who gave their opinions and advice.

See next post from Dan regarding the 36/36 size spring brake chambers, DO NOT USE THEM!

The first note states 36/36, the second one that is handwritten says either to use 30/30 or 30/36. It could be a typing error and not caught.

I will leave this a sticky for a while, then let it float around in our library of information.

Paul,

In the first page of information under parts needed, it says 2 type 30/30 or 36/36 brake chambers. Do not use the type 36/36. Due to the tremendous force that they create, they caused the brake chamber brackets to flex and break. There was actually a NHTSA investigation into this problem and Eagle had the brake chambers removed. They were used mainly on the Model 10S 2 axle Eagle's. The early model 10's used a 30/30 brake chamber and the later model 10's and 15's used a 30/36 brake chamber.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the very valuable information.

One of several reasons why we are glad you are here to share your knowledge with us.

I am going to use 3030 because I was concerned that if I used 3036 I would have to beef up the bracket and I saw no reason for the additional force that would be needed. I think the literature I read said 165 lbs more force. I don't plan on parking on any steep grades!

Paul, if you come across a link for any illustrated books or manuels concerning anything to do with the brake systems let me know as I want to order them. I do alot of reading late of night (read myself to sleep) and would like to have some books on the air brake systems. I have not begun to look for these as of yet but thought you may run across them in your quest of brake wisdom.

thanks......

Hi Steve,

I have not seen any books yet. But I think Amazon would have some or your local library.

I'll let you know if I run acroos any.

I just ran across this from the Bendix site. This explains a complete air brake system, using drum or disk.

The Bendix Air Brake school is something you should all think about, it you want to learn more about these systems. The information is at: http://www.bendix.com/en-us/service/Pag ... chool.aspx

Wayne (Rusty) and I took it in Denver a couple of years ago and it was great. I have thought about taking it again. At the time I was trying to get rid of the parking brake interlock (where you have to push the brake pedal) and was having a heck of a time on what should have been a fairly simple process. The school and the instructor helped me get my hands around the problem.

BTW, our air brake systems are a bit more complicated that one might think. Eagle buses (and perhaps others) have a valve (can't remember the designation) that applies the emergency brake slower than a truck (assume to prevent passenger injury). Most modern systems have anti-compounding valves to prevent overloading the brackets and hardware in the event that the air from the parking brake chamber is released WHILE you are applying service brakes.

You can probably look all day at the great material Bendix publishes, but not fully understand what each component does until you take the class.

The anti-compounding valve is the QR-1C. This is one I am using as part of the conversion on my 01. And that is just one of many anti-compounding valves. The text below was taken from the Bendix site.

The Bendix® QR-1C™ is a dual function valve. The valve’s
primary function is to serve the emergency side of a spring
brake actuator as a quick release valve. In addition, it
functions as an anti-compound device. The double check
valve prevents a service and emergency brake application
from occurring simultaneously.

My manual states that Eagle 05's used a E-6 treadle valve, here is a description of that and an E-10. I chose to use the E-6 valve. The E-10 is a taller valve and I don't have the room between the floor mount and the top of the steering gear mount bracket.

The E-6™ and E-10™ dual brake valves
are floor mounted, treadle operated type brake valves with
two separate supply and delivery circuits for service (primary)
and secondary braking, which provides the driver with
a graduated control for applying and releasing the vehicle
brakes.
The E-10™ dual brake valve is similar to the E-6™
dual brake valve except that a metal coil spring housed in
an upper body assembly replaces the rubber spring used in
the E-6™ valve. The use of a metal coil spring (and the upper
body assembly) provides greater treadle travel and, therefore,
provides the driver with a less sensitive "feel" when
making a brake application. The E-10™ dual brake valve is
generally used on buses, where smooth brake applications
contribute to passenger comfort.

I am very fortunate to have two air brake experts helping me with this conversion, they are very familiar with bus air brake DD-3's and Spring Brakes.

Here is a good link describing the procedure for Spring Brake Installation.

This is a step by step guide, showing how to cage the spring brake properly, how to make sure you determine the correct rod length and the correct position of the slack adjuster relative to the spring brake chamber.

This link show how spring brakes work.

Hello Guys,
I wanted to tell you that I am nearly all done now converting my 1973 05 Eagle from DD-3's to spring brakes. I have a few more connections on the (SR-1) vlv and then I should be done, I sure hope! I will keep this short (Yea Right) and tell you ahead of time after I have a good friend check out my Air Brake Schematic for my system and he feels I have done it correctly I will offer anyone a copy of the schematic I made for my system. I will tell you it is not cheap to put in all DOT bulkhead fittings and all the fittings needed to put in a complete system. I put in all brand new valves and everything from the treadle valve through out the bus.

The reason I do not want to send any of this information yet is as I said to have my plans checked by someone who knows about brakes. I have had so many people say this is simple etc. bull crap. But I made it as simple as I could to pass on to everyone else and will soon. I will make a special post about it only here on Eaglesinternational. Who else wants this information but us Eagle owners. I did copy information off a (Six Wheel Truck) schematic from Bendix though. They had only 3 air tanks and I have installed 4 new ones.

I will have the schematic and a list of all the valves you will need to have a complete system on the drawing and the drawing I send you is nearly the location of all my valves and tanks etc.

I am enclosing a couple of photos of before and after to give you the encouragement to do this.

As soon as Drawing is approved I will post that it is available to anyone really wanting this information. Here are the photos!
Gary
